The inventor of modern air conditioning systems - Willis Carrier (Willis Carrier)

Author:Source:Visits:Date:2013/7/8

Willis Haviland Carrier, November 26, 1876 - October 7, 1950), American engineer and inventor, is the inventor of the modern air-conditioning system, the founder of Carrier Air Conditioning, because of its The great contribution to the air conditioning industry, was later known as "father of air conditioning."

In 1902, he worked as a heating engineer at the R & D department of The Buffalo Forge Co., which made a heater, bellows and exhaust fan, and paid only $ 10 a week. In the same year, only 25 years old Carrier was designated to solve the company's Brooklyn printing plant printing technology. He suddenly found the root cause of the problem is unstable temperature and humidity affect the quality of printing. Therefore, he calculated the exact temperature and humidity required for printing based on the national weather tables and, with its wisdom, developed the first air (temperature and humidity) regulator to maintain the relatively constant temperature and humidity of the printing shop The

Carrier has been constantly improving his device, and in a fog and other trains when inspired by a deep understanding of the temperature, humidity and dew point relationship. ("Apparatus for Treating Air"), which uses a coil and reduces the humidity by 55%. In 1906, the invention obtained the first patent in its life (patent number: US Pat # 808897), and later known as the "father of air conditioning" ('father of air conditioning').

Willis Carrier relentlessly studied temperature, humidity, and dew point, and in 1911 revealed to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers the "Rational Psychrometric Formulae" that he found. The formula has become the air conditioning industry after the calculation of the standard and the basis. From this industry this income, and is widely used in film, tobacco, food, pharmaceutical, textile and other industrial production of air temperature and humidity control.

In 1915, Carrier and the other six engineers, a joint venture of $ 35,000, set up the Carrier Engineering Corporation in New Jersey, the predecessor of Carrier Air Conditioning, which is dedicated to developing air conditioning technology and studying the commercial value of air conditioning.

In 1921, Carrier invented the first centrifugal chillers for large-scale refrigeration, and in the same year the patent.

In 1922, Carrier improved its invention, the first to abandon the toxic ammonia and the use of safer refrigerant, and greatly reduced the unit size, creating a comfortable air conditioning precedent.

In 1924, he succeeded in using air conditioning from a single industry while being used in civilian use. The first few clients included the Madison Square Garden, the conference hall of the US Congress and the House of Representatives, and the White House.

In 1928, he developed the first home air conditioner ('Weathermaker'), installed in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Carrier moved the company's headquarters to Syracuse in New York in 1930, and in the same year, it established branch offices in Japan, and became the industry leader in air conditioning.

During the Second World War, Carrier started to develop air conditioning for military use, Carrier's production of air conditioning units are widely used in warships, military cargo ships, arsenals, especially some of the precision military equipment production line, of which thousands Air conditioning for the Navy's food preservation, mobile air conditioning for the Air Force's military aircraft cooling, Carrier and even by the National Advisory Committee (commission), developed a simulation of polar climate air conditioning devices for military aircraft testing. Carrier has therefore won the Air Force and Navy's "E" Medal, Carrier's contribution to the development of US military work is known as "the greatest engineering achievement."
